will a Cobra 100-Watt 21" Magnet-Mount Antenna work on my cobra 29LTD classic cb radio?
i recently bought a used cobra 29LTD clasic cb radio at a garage sale for 50$ with an amp(great deal im thinking) but the antina that they gave me is a 4ft semi or large truck antena because it was previously on a show truck. this beeing a too large antena for my mercury grand marquise i was wondering what would be a nice downsized version of one that will still give me the same range and what not. the current antena that i got with it is a wilson sw-2000 trucker. i was thinking a magnetic mount that goes diagnal to put on the roof or trunk lid of my car or a glass mount would be acceptable for the rear wind sheild. any sugestions of antenas you have would be good and under about 45$
ps. it also has to have a UHF; SO-239 connection because that is the kind of plug that is in the cb radio for the antenna input
Twenty-one inches is only about 20% of the length of a full quarter-wave vertical, and rather than turn all that RF power into heat via a coil at the bottom of the antenna, I would suggest a good helically wound antenna for greatest efficiency and least amount of loss, if you're going to stay with a short design. That means a Firestik-type antenna. They are more narrow-banded than other designs, so if you're planning on operating on more than CB frequencies, then go with large air-wound coils as high up on the antenna as possible as your best bet.
Remember that the radiating element is going to want to "see" a nice flat ground plane if possible. You want the return currents to cancel each other out, otherwise you end up making the car itself radiate as the antenna system starts turning into a messy dipole. In other words, don't attach it to the back bumper.
The SO in SO-239 is short for "Socket" which is on the radio end. This is HF, by the way, not UHF. You'll want a PL-259 (Plug) on the end of your coax, but most if not all mobile antennas come with the plug as part of the package.
A glass-mount design will not work for your needs, and I would stay away from bottom-loaded, oil-filled coils. Also keep in mind that an amp gives you all mouth, no ears. Use it to complete a contact in deteriorating band conditions, not as a starting point in operating the radio.
