Can somebody help me find the cosine of the angle between two planes?
If given the planes P1: x +4y -z = 10 , P2: 3x-y +2z =4 , and the point A (-2,1,0):
How can I find the cosine of the angle between P1 and P2.
According to the answer key the cosine of the angle is (3/ sqrt of 252) or approximately 0.1890; 1.3 rad or 79.11 degree
Find the normal vectors for both planes, normalize them, and take the dot product.

The normal vector has the same components as the coefficients in the given form. They are:
P1: [1 4 -1]
P2: [3 -1 2]
The magnitudes are sqrt (x^2 + y^2 + z^2), and you divide each vector by its magnitude to normalize it:
P1: [1 4 -1] / sqrt(18)
P2: [3 -1 2] / sqrt(14)
The dot product is the sum of the products of the individual components. You can keep the distributed coefficients outside to save labor here.
(3 - 4 - 2) / sqrt (252) = -3/sqrt(252) = -.189
The dot product of a pair of vectors is the cosine of the angle between them (this is the law of cosines).
cos AB = A•B/|A||B|
Dunno why I got a negative number tho.
edit: Yeah I do. Okay, so these planes intersect at a line, and depending on where you measure, they are forming an angle of either about 80° or about 100°. You're given a point so I imagine they want you to measure the angle enclosing that point.
This is a little trickier but not too inconvenient. Note that the normal of either plane can point up or down. You want the normals to point from the plane to your point. I likely chose one normal pointing away and one toward.
Plug the given point into each plane equation and determine if it lies above or below the point.
P1: 1(-2) + 4(1) - (-8) = 10, so the point is above the plane.
P2: 3(-2) -1 + 2(0) = -7, so the point is above this plane too. Looking at the original vectors, you can see that P1 is flipped (the z component is negative), so it should be flipped over to find the cosine of this angle.
It just so happens that the cosines of supplementary angles are equal in magnitude and opposite in sign, so your answer will only change sign if you measure in the wrong division.
So the answer is 3/sqrt(252), which is what you posted above.
